For months at a time, the northern half of the North American continent disappears behind a veil of white, the sun hovering low at the southern edge of the horizon. Despite the extreme temperature and lingering dark, those who've chosen to make their homes here persevere. The structures take on an air of communion with their landscape, a partnership with the cold, and with the resources that the vast expanse of uninhabited land provides.

The Edge of Knowing is the culmination of a year-long journey from Antarctica to the Arctic; a journey undertaken with the goal of understanding the places that, from the vantage point of the United States, are often simply thought of as being beyond “America". The book The Edge of Knowing was published Kehrer Verlag in 2019.
